Shocking
"30% of medical spending [in the U.S.] - or $700 billion - does nothing to improve care."

No shit, sherlock, it's a fucking for-profit system. That 30% is called "profit" and it's fundamental to capitalism. But way to make the article about the cost efficiency of particular treatments and not the fact that providing a service needed by everyone in a haphazard, profiteering fashion results in worse health outcomes and higher costs.

*golf clap*

Oooh, don't forget good old fashioned, tire spinning, waste. Not only are we flushing cash down the toilet on corporate profits, often times the entire expenditure is wasteful to begin with. Like when a male in his late 70's is given surgery and/or chemotherapy for colon cancer. Not only do the hospitals, doctors, etc. make a profit over and above their costs on procedures like this, even the dollars that cover the costs are wasteful as aggressive therapy in the elderly hasn't been shown to improve outcome (statistically, most die from something else before the prostate cancer would cause real problems). Ummm... on the plus side it does often saddle the poor bastards with incontinence, loss of sexual function, and all the illness and suffering that go with chemo.

So, maybe it's not all that bad... it may in fact be worse.

Insurers also spend a huge chunk of your health care dollar trying to deny you coverage when you do file a claim... extra broken.
